Electric Underfloor Heating for Vinyl flooring
When installing Vinyl over electric underfloor heating mats,
there are several important considerations to keep in mind. Here are some key
points to consider:
1) Planning Stage
Choosing the Type of Vinyl: Most types of Vinyl such
as Luxury Vinyl Tiles and Vinyl Laminate are compatible with the Rayotec Webtech
electric underfloor heating mats system which makes them easy to install.
What flooring is compatible with the Rayotec Webtech
mats? Most Tiles and Vinyl are compatible but always check the flooring
manufacturer's guidelines to ensure compatibility with both electric underfloor
heating and the installation method. You can also use them for stuck down wood,
for floating wood or wood laminate you will need our Foil heating mats which
can be found here.
Check Available Floor Height: It’s important to check
the boundaries of your room and work out the available floor height and make
sure everything will fit. There is 2 types of insulation board for under the
Webtech mats so you need to make sure you are planning for the correct one. If
you have a wooden subfloor you will need to use the 6mm Ultra Tile Backer Boards, there are put
onto a 4mm bed of flexible tile adhesive and then screwed down for stability.
If you are going onto a concrete floor then you can use either the 6mm or 10mm insomax insulation board,
these are stuck down with a 4mm bed of flexible tile adhesive. The Webtech
heating mats are 3.5mm thick for the 150W and 4mm thick for the Webtech Elite
mat.
When installing Vinyl as a final floor finish it is
essential that you cover the heating mats with a flexible latex self levelling
compound, this will also mean additional height on the floor build up. You will
need to cover the heating mat in the flexible latex self levelling compound and
then have a minimum of 10mm over the top of the cables, depending on what the
subfloor is you may require up to 30mm so it is important that you always check
with the latex manufacturer to make sure you comply with their minimum
requirements.
2) Get a Quote
Do your Own Calculations: Measure you room and get
the area in m2. Take away the fixed furniture such as wardrobes or kitchen
units from your overall room size to work out the free floor area. You need to
leave a border around the edge of the room and away from fixed units of between
15-20cm so the mat required will be around 80-85% of the free floor area. The
area of Insulation Boards ordered should be 20% larger than the total floor
area to allow for wastage.
Get Rayotec to Provide an Estimate: If you are unsure what size you would need
then you can always email a set of floor plans to Rayotec along with details of
your floor coverings (ie Vinyl) information about your subfloor (ie concrete or
floorboards) and we will send you a quotation. Don’t forget to include your
telephone number in case we have any questions. You can get in touch via our contact us page here.
Always Purchase Protective Insulation Boards: It is always
advised to buy Insulation boards to make sure you get the best performance out
of your system. If you do not have insulation boards below the heating mat then
you will lose some of the heat down into the cold subfloor, even if you have
insulation under the subfloor you will still loose some of the heat as it will
always try and get to the coldest area. Always remember to check which
insulation board is suitable for your subfloor.
3.
Installing the Kits
Subfloor: Imperfections, such as bumps or unevenness,
should be addressed before installation. This helps to ensure that the flooring
sits evenly and makes good contact with the underfloor heating mats.
Installation with Testing: Install the electric
underfloor heating products as per the manual. If you have any questions just
give us a call or send us an E mail. It is really important that all the
testing is done by an electrician before the self levelling compound is laid just
in case the matting has been damaged during the installation. If you find that
the heating mat has been damaged during the installation you can be safe in the
knowledge that you are covered by Rayotec’s Worry Free Guarantee.
Let Your Flooring Acclimatise: After you have
installed the Vinyl do not turn on the underfloor on at maximum power. You
should always start the temperature of the heating mats at a low level such at
15c or 16c and increase it gradually until you reach the desired temperature.
4.
Setting the Thermostat
Temperature Control: Rayotec supply a range of
digital programmable thermostats that are designed for electric underfloor
heating to control the room temperature. Every thermostat has a floor probe
which will cut off the power to the mat if the flooring gets above a set temperature
to provide protection. Vinyl flooring should not go over 27C and the floor
probe should be programmed accordingly.

Choosing the Webtech Elite mat can save you money!
Did you know that, by using the Elite mat, you can make considerable savings in the amount of self-levelling compound you require? A completely flat surface is essential for tiled or vinyl floors so a self-levelling compound is often poured over the mats to create this. The flatter your underfloor heating is, the less self-levelling compound you need to cover it.
Why do you use less self levelling compound using the Elite mat?
(1) Sticky mats (lay much flatter)
Many other heating mats use 3 integrated strips of tape to stick them down but the areas of mat without tape can float in the liquid self-levelling compound so you need extra to cover the mat.
Webtech Elite is fully adhesive meaning that the whole mat sticks down so it lies flatter and won’t float in the self-levelling compound thereby reducing the amount you need to cover it.
(2) Thinner connector
Other mats have a bulky, shrink wrapped ‘cold connector’ linking the power cable to the cable in the mat and increasing the amount of self-levelling compound you need to cover it.
Webtech Elite has a unique integrated ‘cold connector’, i.e. one continuous thin cable, so there's no bulky shrink-wrap to cover.
Reasons why using less self levelling compound is better:
- (1) Lower material costs
- (2) lower floor heights
- (3) less labour time
