Matthew and Amanda have a 1930's detached house based in Norwich. They were planning to replace their old balanced -flue gas convector heating system along with improving the sub-floor insulation and draught proofing. With this in mind, it seemed to be a perfect time to install electric underfloor heating . The idea of electric underfloor heating also meant that they could enjoy the extra space created by removing the old wall heaters.
We asked them why they chose to use the Ribbon heating system and they replied:
We wanted a low-profile system above the existing suspended timber floor which would allow us to continue to use carpets as floor covering.
The beauty of the Ribbon heating system is that the hessian backed carpet can be laid directly on top of the carpet underlay and heating mat, meaning no messy, expensive self levelling compounds involved.
Matthew found the installation process a "relative doddle" and when asked how he found living with UFH he responded:
Excellent and very cosy. Each of the three main downstairs rooms has an independent time switch and thermostat, so it is perfectly controllable. The floor is now nice and warm, allowing the air temperature to be kept less stuffy and it feels more healthy. Cold feet are a thing of the past, and our cats absolutely love it!
With regards to running costs, Matthew informed us that they have cut their total domestic consumption by 40% in terms of kW/hrs. They benefit from cheap night time electricity and take advantage of the electric system for background heating of the thermal mass of the building. He told us the controllability of the system allows them to use their heating system efficiently with minimal economic cost.
His last comments about the system were:
The trick is to recognise that a house is fundamentally an insulated box. If you first maximise the insulation, then this heating system is the ideal efficient choice to top up the temperature to what is comfortable. Just remember not to leave your box of chocolates on the floor!
